UNIQUE M1853 SHARPS SLANT BREECH CARBINE WITH

CARVED STOCK AND FUNCTIONAL OPERATIONS. Cal. 52. S# 19399. Bbl. measures 21 1/2". The M1853 Sharps is often referred to as the "John Brown Sharps" because at least 900 carbines in the serial range from 10,000 to 18,000 were sent abolitionist organizations in Kansas with ties to John Brown. This M1853 post dates the serial range of the guns sent to the Kansas abolitionists. This Sharps is marked "SHARPS RIFLE MANUFG. CO. HARTFORD. CONN" on the top of the barrel along with a rack number stamped in front of the sight "158". The original sight was replaced with a trapezoidal stationary sight. The carbine is further marked "SHARPS PATENT 1848" & "19399" near the barrel tang. The lockplate is marked "SHARPS PATENT 1852". The entire lockplate is engraved with a simple foliate motif and the hammer is engraved with a similar foliate motif with the area that strikes the percussion cap engraved to resemble the face of a creature. All metal on the gun is iron with the exception of the patchbox and buttplate. The patchbox is lightly hand engraved with the name "Felix Sanz". The barrel band has been replaced with an iron barrel band with a sling swivel below. Another swivel was added to the butt near the toe to facilitate carrying with a sling. The stock has been interestingly carved in a way as to remind the viewer of a Northwest Indian or even shipboard carving. The carving and engraving, though not professional, is quite well done and presents a visually interesting and enchanting carbine. CONDITION: iron has a medium gray, somewhat mottled patina throughout. Brass has a deep mustard patina. Lock is fully functional. Wood has a crack near the toe and a small loss between the toe and the rear sling swivel. (01-21809/BF). $2,400-3,400.
