A fine black wool felt slouch hat, likely dating to the 1880s or 1890s during the ascendancy of the UCV organization. The slouch hat is of classic form, with a double-sewn brim that features black edging material. There is a grosgrain-type hat band covered by a fine Civil War period officer's hat cord of silver and gold bullion. One of the most interesting features of this hat is a silver octagonal rectangle on the front with the initials "G A" engraved upon it. The diameter of the brim is nearly 16" and is reinforced from beneath with a double-sewn 5/8" band. The brown leather sweatband measures about 1 1/2" in height. CONDITION: there is significant wear to the edge binding, and some of the stitching shows wear. The hat band and hat cord generally show light wear, and the silver front plate shows significant tarnish. The body of the hat has one small stitch repair and a few small holes, likely due to insect damage. The sweatband is complete but has darkened with sweat stains. (02-23607/BF). $500-1,500.
