US M1850 STAFF & FIELD OFFICERS SWORD INSCRIBED TO
ELI C. KINSLEY OF THE 47TH MASSACHUSETTS INFANTRY. Overall length: 37". Blade length: 30 1/2". A fine example of an import Civil War Staff & Field officer’s sword by Klingenthal. The blade is etched over 2/3 of its length w/ various military, patriotic & foliate motifs. The spine is etched in part w/ script letters, “Klingenthal”. Gilded brass hilt w/ “US” in the pierced guard. Wire wrapped sharkskin grip. Gilded brass mounted leather scabbard engraved on the throat, “Adjudant Eli C. Kinsley 47th Regt. M.V.M.”. Eli Kinsley was a 34 year old lawyer who joined the 47th Mass. on September 4, 1862. He was promoted to the post of Adjutant on November 4, 1862. The 47th Mass was known as the "Merchant's Guard Regiment" due to the fact it had been recruited primarily through the efforts of Boston merchant Lucius B. Marsh. The 47th primarily served in & around New Orleans, LA. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina & etching remains quite crisp. The hilt retains only traces of original gilding. Grip is a bit worn but complete. Wire is 100%. Scabbard mounts also show only traces of original gilding. Inscription is clear & legible. Leather body is a bit flaked but remains quite strong.
