(LIGHT ARMORED CONNAISISSANCE) BATTALION S 5/10 FIELD GUIDON. 20” x 28” embroidered on red field. The 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion was first formed as Company A, 1st Light Armored Vehicle Battalion in May 1983. In late 1985, the designation was changed to Company A, 3rd Light Armored Vehicle Battalion. In September 1986, the 27th Marines, 7th Marine Amphibious Brigade was activated with the 3rd Light Armored as a brigade component. In October 1988 the unit was reflagged as the 3rd Light Armored Infantry Battalion and relocated to Okinawa in February 1989. In July 1991, the unit returned back home and were posted at Twenty Nine Palms Marine Base in California as part of the 7th Regimental Combat Team.
In August 1990, the unit deployed as part of Operation Desert Shield to Saudi Arabia with the 7th Marine Expeditionary Brigade, 1st Marine Division. They were among the first in combat with Iraqi troops repelling attacks on a headquarters. When the ground offensive began in 1991 the battalion was part of the troops that liberated the Kuwait City airport. On their way back home, an element of the battalion was diverted to the Philippines to assist with the aftermath of a volcanic eruption. From December 1992 to April 1993, elements deployed to Somalia. In March 1994, the unit was redesignated as the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion.
In 1998, elements deployed back to Kuwait for a time as an Allied air campaign was waged on Iraq. In 2003 the battalion helped invade Iraq attacking the Rumaylah Oil Fields. Later the battalion helped destroy an Iraqi armored counterattack. In the drive on Tikrit, the battalion recaptured several American POWs. They were back at Twenty Nine palms by mid-June. In August 2004, the battalion was back in Iraq and in November they took part in the tough fighting for Fallujah. By April 2005 they were again back home. More Middle East deployments took place in 2006.
The battalion and its five companies, is part of the 1st Marine Division today and remains posted at Twenty Nine Palms in California. Their unit nickname is “Wolfpack.”
The red guidon is one issued for use in the field per Marine regulations. In this case, the guidon reflects a temporary attachment of Sierra Battery of artillery, 5th Battalion, 10th Marine Regiments, also of the 1st Marine Division. This was probably for a joint task force mission.
