SQUADRON 24, FLEET MARINE FORCES FLAG. 52” x 64” double applique embroidered with gold fringe. This is the flag of the Headquarters & Maintenance Squadron 24, Fleet Marine Forces, an aviation unit/aviation support unit. Their mission is to provide maintenance, ammo resupply, avionics repair and other support for a Marine Air Group.
The squadron began in March 1942 at Marine Corps Air Station Ewa, Oahu, Hawaii. Their original designation was Headquarters and Service Squadron 24 and they became part of the Marine Aircraft Group 24, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. In March 1942, the unit deployed the New Hebrides in the Pacific. In June 1942, they were moved to Santa Barbara, California and the next month were redesignated as Headquarters Squadron 24. In September 1943 they were back in the New Hebrides and reassigned to the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. In 1944 and into 1945 took part in the Battle of Bougainville and the Philippines Campaign. In September–October 1945 they were sent to Peiping (now Beijing), China and participated in the occupation of North China from October 1946 to April 1947 to protect American citizens caught up in the Chinese Civil War. The squadron relocated to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina and assigned to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing in May 1949.
On February 15, 1954, the unit was redesignated as Headquarters and Maintenance Squadron 24 (H&MS-24) and in November 1962 they participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis. H & MS 24 was transferred to Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii and became part f the 1st marine Brigade in April 1968. In October they were redesignated as Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 24. Their designation changed again in October 1994 when they became Marine Aviation Logistics Support Element, Kaneohe, part of the Aviation Support Element, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force. In February 2002, however, the squadron reverted to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 24.
Their unit standard follows the Marine regulations for ceremonial and parade flags as it has gold fringe on its out edges.
