US MARINES CORPS HEADQUARTERS BATTALION,

4TH MARINE DIVISION FMF. 52” x 64” double applique embroidered on red field. The Fleet Marine Forces (FMF) were created on December 7th, 1933 by General Order No. 241 from the Secretary of the Navy, Claude Swanson. This established a combined arms command that would later consist of a Marine Expeditionary Force composed of a Marine Division, a Marine Air Wing and a Marine Logistics Group. What is now doctrine for these commands came out of experience in World War Two. The FMF is commanded by a lieutenant general. FMF units can be expanded as needed and can be broken down into smaller brigade sized units depending on the task at hand.
This is the headquarters flag of the HQ battalion of the 4th Marine Division Fleet Marine Force. The 4th Marine Division was raised in 1943 and after extensive training was first in action at Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima, some of the most costly battles of the war in the Pacific. The division suffered over 17,000 casualties in these actions. The 4th Marines were awarded two Presidential Unit Citations and a Navy Unit Commendation before being deactivated on November 28, 1945.
In 1966, the division was reactivated as part of the Marine Corps Reserve, a role in which it is prominent today. In June 1966, the WW2 division colors were presented to the then new commander of the division. Its primary mission is training units of the marine Corps Reserve but also to be ready in case of a full call up to national service. Some elements of the division were called up in the 1990 for Iraq and again in 2004 for Afghanistan. Their current headquarters is in New Orleans.
The flag bears golden fringe which makes it the ceremonial standard for this command and not the one used in the field. CONDITION: very good to fine, staining. (02-17547-59/SJS). $600-800
