US SPECIAL FORCES, 75TH RANGER REGIMENT, 3RD
BATTALION FLAG. 3’ x 4’ regulation double applique embroidered eagle and crest on a blue field, gold fringe. Motto: “SUA SPONTE” means “Of Their Own Accord,” which stands for soldiers of the Rangers who have to volunteer three times to join and remain in the command. Inspection label dated May 15, 1984. In January 1974, General Creighton Abrams ordered the formation of a new Ranger battalion, the first since World War Two. This new battalion carried the lineage and colors of Merrill’s Marauders with Company C, 75th Infantry Regiment (Ranger) becoming part of the new 1st Battalion. In October, the 2nd Ranger Battalion was activated at Fort Lewis drawing from Company H, 75th Regiment. In October 1984, the 3rd battalion, which drew from Company F, 75th Regiment, stood up at Fort Benning, Georgia. On February 3, 1986, the 75th Ranger Regiment was officially designated drawing lineage from active and inactive units that dated to World War Two. Units of the 75th Rangers soon took part in the Iranian Hostages Rescue Mission, the invasion of Panama, Operation Desert Storm, Somalia, and modern operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The 75th Ranger Regiment is part of the US Army Special Forces (including the Green Berets groups and Delta Force) and along with the US Navy SEALS, Marine Force Recon and Air Force Commandos constitute Special Forces Command. Ranger training is among the toughest in the Army today and the tab on a graduate’s shoulder is often a ticket to higher command in the Army as well as a pathway to Special Forces and Delta. The 75th Ranger Regiment not only has the three battalions as organic to the unit but also a special troops battalion, recon company and an intelligence battalion as components. The flag is for the 3rd Battalion, 75th Rangers and is Army blue. The regimental crest is within the Eagle and ties back to the heritage of Merrill’s Marauders with the Nationalist Chinese Sun, the star of the Burmese flag and the lightning bolt signifying the swift strike capabilities of the unit. The four colors represent four of the original combat teams of Merrill’s command who were designated by color. The concept of special ranger units in America dates back to King Philip’s War when Church’s Rangers fought against Indian tribes who were hostile. For the French and Indian War, Robert Rogers raised Roger’s Rangers who gained the name by “ranging” far behind French lines for operations. The 75th Ranger Regiment claims heritage to this command. CONDITION: very good to find overall. (02-19982-31/JS). $300-500.
