CONVERTED TO PERCUSSION. Cal. 69. NSN. Bbl. 42". Marked on top left w/ "VP" eagle head proof. This musket was the last production US flintlock musket as the Model 1840. It has been converted to percussion by the Belgian method w/ the nipple set directly into the breech of the bbl. The bevelled lockplate has a rounded tail. The original notch for the flint pan has a brass filler piece. The original hammer was replaced with a military style percussion hammer. The lockplate is marked vertically at the tail "SPRING / FIELD / 1841". There is an eagle over "US" marking in-front of hammer. Walnut stock. Flat buttplate. Tang is marked "US". Panel on the left side has two indistinct oval cartouches. Letters resemble "SM / LW". Forend has three flat bands retained by springs. The upper band is a double strap type & carries the brass sight. Ramrod has tapered & flattened tip. Sling swivels attached to the trigger guard bow & middle band. Narrow sideplate carries the two lock screws. "LR" appears behind trigger guard tang. CONDITION: stock has well-worn original finish w/ numerous handling marks throughout. Notable missing chip on left side of breech screw. Metal has been cleaned from an oxidized appearance w/ shallow pitting to resemble the original bright appearance as manufactured. Replacement hammer screw. Hammer is slightly loose on tumbler. Nipple is replacement. Bore has a dark oxidized appearance. (01-26185/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-800.
