Unique Antique Coat/Hat Rack Made from a U.S. Springfield Model 1884 ''Trapdoor'' Infantry Rifle, with bayonet and scabbard, on ornate heavy cast-bronze ''Lion's Foot'' floor base, #362068, .45-70 Gov't. CF cal., 32-5/8'' round barrel has standard front blade (doubles as bayonet lug) and adjustable Buffington (correctly marked ''R'', for Rifle) rear sights, marked ''V P'' at breech, trapdoor breechblock is marked ''US/Model/1884'' at hinge, receiver is marked ''362068'' at breech; flat lockplate is marked ''(spread-wing eagle)'' left of ''U.S./Springfield''; steel fittings include two-piece trigger guard with sling swivel at front, buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw, two spring-retained barrel bands (top with stacking swivel), nosecap; oil-stained walnut fullstock with slotted button-tip steel ramrod below. Mfg'd ca. late 1880s-early 1890s. Condition is very good as configured, all metal parts having been nickel plated at time of alteration (trapdoor and rear sight blued), approx. 90% lightly dulling nickel remains. Bayonet scabbard with added screw-fastened three-prong coat/hat rack attachment; heavy cast-bronze footed base screw-attached to buttplate and stock comb. Stock sanded (removing left-side inspector's cartouche) and lightly varnished. Action is strong and smooth; bore is clean showing overall frosting and defined rifling. Est.: $500-$1,000. (Antique)
