PISTOL. Cal. 52. NSN. 9” Overall. 5” Oct. bbl. w/ 2 silver bands at breech. Engraved back action percussion lock: “V. LIBEAU”. German silver mounted w/ hinged trap & butt for caps. Valentine G. W. Libeau died in Cincinnati, OH in 1857 but mfg. & repaired guns in New Orleans for nearly 20 years. He operated a gun shop on Camp St. in 1829, but sold his business in 1848. The ad read: “The under signed offers for sale rifles, guns, belt & other pistols, & a complete set of gunsmiths tools at a bargain. Persons wishing to purchase a whole or a part of above will find it to their advantage to call on V. Libeau at Mr. Erwin’s Tremont House, St. Charles Street”. CONDITION: very good overall. Stock has hand worn patina w/ heavy wear to cross hatching on grip. Mechanically fine w/ bright, smooth bore. PROVENANCE: Collection of John Montague. (01-20734/JS). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
