VERY FINE CLASSIC CUSTOM BOLT ACTION RIFLE BY JOHN
DUBIEL. Cal. 257 Roberts. S# 2474. Bbl. 22". Michael Petrov in "Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century" states "There may have been other custom makers who could make a stock as well as John Dubiel, but there were none better". Dubiel worked for Hoffman Arms & took over building rifles under his own name after the demise of that company in the early 1930s & continued their serial number series. Petrov also relates that the highest S# in his database was 730. This rifle is #765. This rifle has 22" medium weight bbl. w/ integral quarter rib holding three folding leaf rear sight. Rib has dbl. step transition to bbl. as found on Ardmore Oklahoma built Hoffman rifles. Top is deeply stippled & stamped "CAL. 257. & w/ S#." Top of bbl. stamped "MADE BY JOHN DUBIEL." Rifle also features banded on wide sling eye & distinctly Hoffman banded on front sight ramp holding gold bead under machined protector retained by spring loaded detent. Small ring Model 98 Mauser Action is marked w/ S#. German proof & "Kar 98" on left side. Receiver ring is stippled. A "Redfield" 1 piece scope base has been installed. Bottom metal has had trigger guard bow slimmed & thinned, but retains military floorplate & lock screws. Bolt body & extractor are damascened as are action runways & follower. Bolt handle has been lowered & pear shaped knob installed. A low scope safety is installed on bolt shroud. Stock of dense, well streaked & lightly figured European walnut measures 13 5/8" over ribbed steel buttplate w/ short top spur. Stock is classically styled w/ steel grip cap, horn forend tip, as well as well cut point pattern checkering w/ mullered borders at grip & around forend. Right hand cheekpiece is of classic Dubiel style w/ broad flare to shadowline transition. Rifle is mounted w/ 50's vintage Unertl Hawk 4x scope w/ fine crosshair & post reticle in Redfield rings. CONDITION: very fine, retaining nearly all of its original finishes on wood & metal w/ some loss of blue on sharp edges & w/ considerable loss on buttplate which is mostly silver. Damascening is strong & bright. There are some sm. handling marks on stock. Very fine, sharp shiny bore. Scope & associated work were done 15-20 years after this rifle was made. Scope is very fine w/ some light edge wear on exterior. Optically clear. A fine rifle by one of America's classic makers in a great caliber. (21-1402/MGM). CURIO. $4,000-8,000.
