VERY FINE CONFEDERATE CAVALRY SABER IDENTIFIED TO
THOMAS GOODE OF 3RD VIRGINIA CAVALRY. Louis Haiman was among the most prolific sword makers in the Confederacy. His cavalry sabers are quite distinctive showing a horizontal "flaw" at ricasso, the braising of iron to steel. His hilts are also distinctive w/ lg. thick pommel, heavy iron wire & often w/ oil cloth grips such as this one. Haiman scabbards are also distinct being lap seamed w/ lead solder, iron flange soldered throats & distinctive heavy brass mts. These swords are not rare, they are commonly encountered, but this example ranks in the top few percent of completeness & condition plus it has history of the original owner. Thomas Francis Goode, a Mecklenburg country lawyer & member of the Virginia Secession Convention carried this sword. He enlisted in the 2nd Virginia Cavalry in May 1861 & was elected Capt. of Co. E. Co. E became a part of the 3rd Virginia Cavalry where Goode rose to the rank of Col., commanding the regiment until Oct. 1862. The 3rd saw action at Yorktown, Williamsburg, the Seven Days Battle, the Battle of 2nd Bull Run, & Antietam. He distinguished himself in battle under J.E.B Stuart, charging two companies of Illinois Cavalry w/ 100 men, driving them back into a lg. Union force. Gen. Bankhead recommended him for promotion to Brigadier General. J.E.B. Stuart wrote his wife a few days later saying, "the 3rd VA cavalry (Col. Goode) is now in my brigade & made a handsome charge". This sword was purchased from the descendants of Thomas Francis Goode as related by consignor. Accompanying the sword is a May 22, 1928 donation card with Daughters of the Confederacy imprint stating “Sword of T.F. Goode 2nd Virginia Cavalry”. Also accompanying sword is a large file of research, correspondence & biographical material. Mr. Murch has displayed this sword in his beautiful cavalry themed displays for many years. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: As noted above, large file and donation card. CONDITION: 35 3/4" blade shows original tool marks, is overall gray w/ staining & chipped blade tip. Grip retains most of its original oil cloth still w/ bright black color though worn & chipped at high areas & about 5% missing under pommel. Brass has a medium mustard patina matching on brass scabbard mts. Scabbard is smooth & brown w/ 1 lg. dent near drag. There appears to be additional peening on pommel to tighten hilt, which is very tight now. It is missing its protective leather washer that would have normally kept sword tight. PROVENANCE: Herbert "Bert" Murch Collection. (02-13452/JS). $4,000-6,000.
