OFFICER’S SWORD & SWORD BELT. This is a beautiful classic model 1852 Naval officer’s sword inscribed on throat “A. J. HOUGH / USN / Presented by his friends”. 28” Blade retains most of its original luster w/ higher grade naval etched patriotic panels. Patent leather sword belt retains both original hangers & high grade gilded 2 piece buckle w/ eagle surrounded by 13 stars.
Andrew J. Hough (1828-1864) USN, assistant engineer, carpenter, entered Navy in 1861, USS Lancaster, died in service from tuberculosis, tombstone at Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth New Hampshire reads “Andrew J. Hough / USN / Died Sept. 2, 1864 / 36 Years”.
CONDITION: fine overall. Sword hilt, scabbard mounts, & belt plate retain much of their original gold plate. Blade is mostly bright, light areas of staining. Leather scabbard body & leather sword belt & hangers all retain most of their original black polish w/ light scuffing & light cracking. Overall superior condition for Civil War swords & sword belts. Gold bullion sword knot is complete & good-very good. (02-15433/JS). $2,000-3,000.
