VERY FINE RELIEF CARVED 18TH CENTURY FLINTLOCK

JAEGER RIFLE BY C. FREUND OF FURSTENAU. Cal. 58. NSN. The 31 3/4" slightly swamped octagon bbl. is fitted with adj. U-notch rear and bead front sights. Top flat is silver inlaid "C. Frevnd Fvrstenav". Lock with round bodied plate is fitted with serpentine cock, inset rounded pan, bridled frizzen and roller on feather spring with bulbous finial. Light scroll engraving is on tail of plate and cock. Area under pan is engraved "C. Freund" (Most likely Christoph, working 1740-80). Steel trigger plate is fitted with dbl. set triggers. Full stock of nicely fiddle figured European walnut is brass mounted and these mounts include well shaped and deep relief scroll engraved sideplate, faceted trigger guard with scroll finial, heavy buttplate with octagonal top section which has 3" engraved scroll return along toeline. Other brass inlays are on bottom edge of righthand cheekpiece and top of sliding wooden patchbox cover with release at rear. Stock has well carved moldings around ramrod channel, lock and sideplates. There is fine relief carved acanthus scroll with floral highlights behind bbl. tang, at front and rear of cheekpiece, along rear of grip on right side and behind thimble. A bone and ebony inlaid 8 pointed star is on face of cheekpiece and a silver crestplate is at top of grip. Full stock with brass cap is pinned to bbl. and ebony ramrod with brass tip and tail mounts through two beaded pipes and matching thimble. Large sling button on toeline has matching bail 3" from muzzle. CONDITION: fine, iron parts with old smooth brown patina. Brass is nicely toned. Stock retains most of its original oil finish with a good scattering of both heavy and light marks. Carving remains relatively crisp. Bore is very fine, shiny with some minor frosting toward muzzle.
