This Columbian blacktail hunt is for the closing weekend (September 19-20) for one hunter for two full days. May be accompanied by one non-hunter.

This University of California property has only the opening and closing weekends open to hunters with access limited to 6 hunters in each weekend making this a very lightly hunted area. Most of the 12 slots are available only by lottery; this hunt is one of the few exceptions.

The Hopland Research & Extension Center (HREC) is a multi-disciplinary research and education facility in Mendocino County located in the Mayacamas Mountains in Mendocino County, roughly a two hour drive north of San Francisco.

This property of 5,300 acres of oak woodland, grassland, chaparral, and riparian environments. Elevation at the center ranges from 600 ft to 3,000 ft and is accessible via an extensive network of both maintained all-weather dirt roads and unmaintained four-wheel drive tracks. Spread across the property are various springs, perennial natural ponds, and riparian corridors. The surrounding lands create an extensive additional wildlife refuge and are a mixture of private ranches, vineyards, and over 45,000 acres of rugged BLM land. Fires in 2018 have helped to clear some of the undergrowth, enhancing the habitat even more.

The wildlife population is robust and diverse including black bear, mountain lions, bobcats, and most relevant to the hunting, a resident herd of Colombian black-tailed deer that current research efforts estimate in the range of 500-600 individuals.

For most of the year, the vast majority of HREC outside of the headquarters area is lightly travelled with visitation limited to active researchers, occasional guided hikes, and employees maintaining the property and managing the small sheep flock that grazes some of the lower pastures.

The hunt includes
• Two days of pre-hunt scouting including a one-hour meeting with HREC staff about the property and past hunting information.
• Two days (Saturday and Sunday) of self-guided hunting.
• Maps showing all water sources on the property, contours, and satellite imagery of vegetation.
• Access to our skinning shed with power hoist, cleaning equipment, and cooling room.
• Participation in active deer research activities.

Accommodation onsite is not currently offered, the hunting area is 10 minutes from the small town of Hopland, which has numerous visitor facilities including two hotels and various restaurants and bars, and only 25 minutes from Ukiah with many more options.

You must comply with all relevant California Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations, HREC policies, and complete HREC's Deer Hunt Firearm Authorization Form.
