VERY SCARCE FRENCH CONTRACT REMINGTON ROLLING
BLOCK SINGLE SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 8mm Lebel. S# 12203. Serial number matches on receiver and trigger guard tangs and buttstock. This number is visible only when buttstock is removed. There is an additional number on the left side of the buttstock script "A" and "1011. Bbl. 30 1/4". These rifles were made under a 1914 dated contract for France. Slightly more than 100,000 were produced. Many were sent to the colonies after the war and saw hard service which makes specimens difficult to find today especially in better condition. The features of the rifle are much the same as the Model 1910 except for the caliber. Ladder rear sight graduated to 2400 yards. Inverted "V" front sight mounted on a band. Receiver tang marked "REMINGTON ARMS - UNION METTALIC CTG. CO. / REM. WORKS, ILION, NY U.S.A. PAT'D OCT. 22 1901." Barrel is marked on top at mid point "CAL. 8 MM". Day's patent extractor. Replacement cleaning rod. Bayonet lug is present. Walnut stock set. Handguard with pressed metal reinforcement extends from receiver to just beyond lower band. Two band forend. Sling swivels are carried on the upper band and under the buttstock. CONDITION: stock set has the wear, dents and handling marks expected from long hard service. Notable gouge under left rear of forend. Handguard has a crack extending from the reinforcing clip to the rear sight. Metal has turned grey and patina with wear and areas of oxidation and shallow pitting notable on triggerguard and upper end of barrel. Bore has strong rifling turning dark in grooves. (24-1347/RW). CURIO. $300-400.
