Bbl. 19 3/8". Type 44 bolt action carbine mfg. in Tokyo, Japan at the Koishikawa arsenal circa 1911-1933. The receiver is marked with a Chrysanthemum above Kanji characters denoting the model designation over the top of the chamber, with the S# and Koishikawa arsenal insignia marked on the left receiver wall. Chrysanthemum is only partially defaced, with two strike marks present on the upper half. Major metal components exhibit a blue finish overall. Follower exhibits a nitre blue finish, with the bolt stop and trigger exhibiting a screw finish. Bolt body and extractor are polished in-the-white. Two-piece wood buttstock without drain holes, with smooth wood handguard. Blade front sight, with ladder V-notch rear sight. Early pattern bayonet housing, with correct 2-hole cleaning rod provision in butt. Numbers are matching in the correct early pattern via the assembly number and include, the receiver (underside), trigger, bolt stop, floorplate (interior), bayonet housing, bayonet release button, rear sight slide, bolt body, extractor, safety knob, firing pin, as well as the stock and handguard (on the interiors). The Japanese katana is of WWII manufacture for an NCO and measures 38 1/2" overall with a 27 1/2" blade. The blade has no visible hamon and is serial numbered near the spine "148552". It has a brass habaki and pierced, gilded brass tsuba with no cherry blossoms. Painted cast aluminum tsuka with typical kabuto-gane. There is a full-length hi. Saya is field green painted iron. Books include "EIGHTY-FIRST DIVISION SOP", "OPERATION REPORT 81st INFANTRY DIVISION OPERATION ON PELELIU ISLAND 23 SEPT – 27 NOV 1944", and a "yearbook" titled "81st INFANTRY DIVISION THE WILDCATS". The one of a kind Peleliu Island Operation Report is actually the original report of the operation and was likely never reproduced or copied. Also included in this group are two group photographs of the 81st Division, a base metal pocket watch, a Qualification Badge for "RIFLE", "MARKSMAN", and "PISTOL", two Quartermaster Corps collar insignia, and a Technical Sergeant sweetheart pin. CONDITION: major metal components retain bountiful amounts of their original arsenal blue finish, exhibiting little appreciable wear, with a few scattered spots of light to mild surface oxidation overall. Strawed components and bolt exhibit varying degrees of surface level oxidation, and spots of age-related discoloration. Muzzle crown exhibits some pitting, with some marring present on the bayonet release button checkering. Mirror bore, exhibiting well defined rifling throughout. Stock exhibits scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable. Sword generally shows light wear overall with some loss of finish to the tsuka. The edge of the blade has a few light nicks. Books and photographs are complete but a bit soiled. The "yearbook" of the 81st Infantry does show water damage. (24-4202/MLW/BF). $2,000-4,000.
