Vintage Santa Clara Blackware Wedding Vase
This Santa Clara Blackware Wedding Vase is a vintage beauty that was purchased from the Phoenix Heard Museum auction. Created by Belen Tapia, circa 1970's, this was hand built & stone polished to produce the high shine against the matte clay with a heavily incised, geometric design. It's about 8" tall & 5-1/4" wide, no chips or cracks & in very good condition & is signed. Purchased from the Heard Museum in Phoenix. This Santa Clara Blackware Wedding Vase is a one of a kind, museum quality collectible! Belen Tapia (1914-1999) was a niece of Serafina Tafoya and first cousin of Margaret Tafoya & her grandmother was Nestoria Naranjo. She started to work clay in 1935 & was an innovator of polychrome redware. She is referenced in Barry's "American Indian Pottery", Schaaf's "Pueblo Indian Pottery, 750 Artist Biographies" & Trimble's "Talking with the Clay, The Art of Pueblo Pottery in the 21st Century" & many others.
