WESTLEY – RICHARDS Classic English Drop-lock double gun (12 gauge with two sets of barrels)

Serial number: O - 9137

According to the Westley Richards document of certification with copies from their factory ledger (all included with the gun), this gun was built in London on 29 August, 1912. It is a double hammerless ejector gun with their patented hand detachable “drop locks,” steel barrels, and single trigger. Everything works.

Very well executed floral engraving is present on the action (top, bottom, and “scroll back” sides), as well as on the top of both sets of barrels at the breech, on the tang, screw heads, the trigger guard and grip extension, and on the furniture at both ends of the fore end.

The sliding safety is also engraved, and the word “SAFE” is gold filled. In front of the top lever is engraved in small letters “WESTLEY RICHARDS, and “PATENT ONE TRIGGER.” Strong case colors remain on the water table and inside the fore end, and case colors on the outside of the action are probably 25 – 30%.

One set of barrels is stamped on the bottom “FOR STEEL SHOT” and “RESLEEVED BY J. RIGBY & CO.” Both sets are perfect fits and appear identical. On the top rib is stamped “LONDON WESTLEY RICHARDS & CO.” There are numerous clear proof marks, including “NITRO PROOF.” The barrels are 29” to the “doll’s head” lock-up extensions. The bores are shiny. Chambers may have been lengthened at some point, since they are 2 ¾” – 70 mm.

The stock (14 3/8” LOP) is of very nicely figured wood – probably European walnut, with excellent fine line checkering on the fore end and wrist. It is an English-style straight grip. The butt is also very finely checkered with no chips or cracks. There is a stock medallion with the letters “RA” which could easily be buffed out and updated or left blank.

See the accompanying photos. This gun is an old-timer, but is in beautiful condition for hunting or for show in the gun rack. A check of the used guns on the Westley Richards (or similar) web site will illustrate the value that these old guns still retain. This gun comes in a protective felt-lined leather case which is a tight fit.
