WHITELOCK’S PATENT UNDER HAMMER PERCUSSION FOWLER
WITH ORNATE NEAR EASTERN GOLD DAMASCENED BARREL. Cal. 475 Smoothbore. NSN. Bbl. 34 3/8". In 1835, Carl Otto Whitelock of Stockholm patented this firing mechanism which has “hammer” of flat steel retained by “trigger” shaped w/ lower portion having notch which retains “hammer” in firing position. Bottom of steel trigger & hammer guard is stamped “WHITELOCKS PATENT”. Other guns are known w/ this mechanism including pistols & it appears that all examples are custom made. This gun is fitted w/ 34 3/8" bbl. w/ turned decoration & is relief engraved for its entire length w/ scrolling acanthus w/ floral highlights. Most of these highlights are gold & silver damascened. Full length stock appears to be of plain grain elm & extends to muzzle w/ sm. German silver cap. Stock is pinned to bbl. & measures 13 3/4" over steel buttplate. Sling loops aren’t attached, old hickory ramrod w/ worn tip is held by 2 iron pipes & matching thimble. CONDITION: very good to fine, bbl. retaining nearly all of its damascening over what appears to be brown period refinish. Firing mechanism is mostly gray to brown patina. Stock retains most of its original oil finish. Fair bore. Mechanically good. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Gary Parietti. (01-19315/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
