RIFLE WITH VERY RARE EXTRA LENGTH STOCK & MADIS LETTER. Cal. 40-82 WCF. S#. 89174. Bbl. 26" octagon. As noted in accompanying letter from George Madis, special order stock dimensions are very rarely found on Winchester rifles. Lyman Express bead front, standard sporting rear w/ a Lyman tang peep sight having the correct code "N" stamped under the base. Full length mag. Blue finish w/ case colored action & forend cap. Single set trigger. Forend & pistol grip stock of XXX fancy black walnut. Features include style "H" factory checkering, ebony grip insert & hard rubber shotgun buttplate. The special order stock has an LOP of 14 1/2", one inch longer than standard. Special order stock dimensions are very rarely found on Winchester rifles. Left inside of lower tang is marked with assembly # "379" followed by "XXX" wood grade marking & "RB" for rubber buttplate. A matching "379" is found in the top tang channel. UNATTACHED ACCESORIES: a George Madis hand written letter discussing the rare special features and originality of the rifle. Cody Firearms Records check stating: Type: Rifle / Caliber: 40/82 / Barrel type: Octagon / Trigger: Set / Checkered stock, Pistol grip / Received in warehouse on June 15, 1894 / Shipped from warehouse on June 15, 1894, Order number 13986." CONDITION: overall a very attractive original special order 1886 rifle. Bbl. & mag tube retain over 80% lightly faded original blue. Action shows 40%+ lightly faded factory case colors with scattered peppery oxidation appearing at bottom. Original wood finish is very good, showing some wear spots, scattered scratches & marks. Right side of forend has a short tight grain crack from the highly figured wood approx 1/4" in length. Front sight base shows distortion on right side from improper sight adjustment. Sound action & set trigger. Bore has a slightly frosted appearance retaining strong rifling. (o1-25862/DS). ANTIQUE. $12,000-18,000.
