WINCHESTER MODEL 1885 LOW WALL SINGLE SHOT RIFLE
W/ ACCESSORIES IN DISPLAY CASE. Cal. 38-55. S# 76775. Bbl. 23 7/8". Model 1885 Low Wall single shot rifle mfg. by Winchester in 1896. Octagonal bbl. is marked w/ Winchester's address over the top flat, w/ the cal. designation marked on the bbl. at the breech. Dovetailed German silver blade front sight w/ dovetailed semi-buckhorn rear sight. Plain wood straight grip buttstock w/ schnabel tip forend. Buttstock exhibits 2 screw holes beneath the buttplate, which were used to mount the rifle within the case. Left side frame screw is no longer present, as it was removed & replaced with a contemporary screw that helped affix the rifle to the display case. Rifle is accompanied by a display case alongside several accessories including several rds. of ammunition, vintage primers, reloading equipment, projectiles, & several brass cases. Case exhibits a plaque on the interior that reads "Senator Galloway of Grand Junction, Colorado gave this rifle to George Swenton (Red George) who was one of the survivors of the Battle of Grand Lake. When he died in 1916 he left the rifle to Walter Eldridge who in turn left it to Maurice L. Eldridge. When he passed away in 1986 he left the rifle to Maurice D. Eldridge.". CONDITION: frame, lever, hammer, & buttplate exhibit a mottled gray patina. Bbl. exhibits wear overall w/ worn areas showing through to gray patina. Bore is bright, exhibiting strong rifling throughout. Wood furniture shows some marks from handling & storage, but otherwise remains sturdy & serviceable.
