STARR WITH TRANSITIONAL FEATURES BETWEEN TYPES II & III. Cal. 69. NSN. Bbl. 42". This 1832 dated musket has the traditional browned iron parts of the Type II but has the later Type III reinforced trigger guard bow. 42" bbl. stamped “US" "JM” & w/ “P” in cartouche at rear. Tang is dated 1832. Bayonet lug is on top of bbl. Case hardened lock features reinforced cock, inset brass pan, bridled frizzen w/ forward tilt to top & feather spring w/ bulbous finial. Lock stamped w/ "US" & starburst over “N. STARR” under pan & “MIDDtn" "CONN." "1832” w/ Starr device on tail of plate. Internal inspection reveals matching “M” assembly mark on all major components, including cock, frizzen, pan & lockplate. Pan stamped “XX” & matching marks are in lock mortise. Walnut stock w/ very low comb attaches to bbl. w/ 3 spring retained bands. Inspectors mark “LS” (Luther Sage) is on left side behind sideplate. Initials “DT” (Daniel Taylor) are on top of comb in front of buttplate tang, this area is also stamped “45”. Furniture is of browned iron & "US" stamp is on buttplate tang. Most likely original button head ramrod is present. CONDITION: exceptionally fine, Bbl. & other browned parts retaining over 80% of that finish w/ areas where lacquer has chipped or been worn through. Lock retains about 80% original case hardening color, thinning & graying on tail. Stock retains over 80% original oil finish w/ scattering of marks & dents. Inspector mark on left side is sharp & clear. Mark on top of comb somewhat obscured by over stamp. Bore bright & shiny. Lock crisp. Nathan Starr was awarded a contract for over 15,000 of these muskets which he made between 1829-1840 in Type III configuration. These muskets are quite rare in original flint as most were converted to percussion. This musket is worthy of the finest collection of military arms. (01-19856/MGM). ANTIQUE. $5,000-8,000.
