3’ x 4’ double applique embroidered on red field, motto: “WE MOVE”, crest of crescent moon on eagle’s shield, PA QM label dated 1-11-1945. U.S. Army units occupied Germany after its defeat for a number of years. After units that had served in the war rotated down what remained was considered the U.S. Army Constabulary which acted more like a police force. In 1947 the Department of the Army, seeing the Cold War brewing, decided to alter the Army’s mission in Germany to one of defense converted some Constabulary units to field artillery under the umbrella of the 7732nd Filed Artillery Group. This would consist of four field artillery battalions; 70th, 74th, 91st and 94th.

The 70th Field Artillery Battalion formed with personnel from the 15th Constabulary Squadron as its core in mid-December 1948. They first appear on the roster of units of the Artillery Group in 1949 posted at Feussen, Germany. The Group had lost two earlier artillery battalions and the 70th replaced one of these. The unit was equipped with 105 Millimeter howitzers which were towed by trucks.

Each battalion was assigned as support to other combat arms units. In the case of the 70th Field Artillery, they supported the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment. In 1951 the battalion was redesignated as the 70th Armored Field Artillery Battalion and in 1952 were re-equipped with self-propelled 105 Millimeter howitzers. In July, their duty post was changed to Nurnberg. A couple years later they became part of the 18th Artillery Group. CONDITION: fine overall. (02-17547-15/JS). $600-800.
