RIFLE. Cal. 8x57 (8mm Mauser). S# 1791i. Bbl. 23 1/2". Blade front sight. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2000m. Action screws, band spring & bayonet lug are mismatched but the remaining visible parts are matching to receiver with many being renumbered likely by a German depot during the war. Front sight is also cut for a hood which was a practice not done until 1941, further proving the depot theory. Receiver top has "ax 1940" marking denoting 1940 mfr. by Erma. Parts have mixed Waffenamts such as bbl. having a Steyr "623" Waffenamt. Right side of receiver has three WW2 German eagle "280" Waffenamts. Arsenal rework type blue finish. Laminated stock set with left side sling provisions. Stock is matching to receiver & has a "P" marking but no other visible stamps. Cleaning rod present. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: undated Weyersberg S84/98 bayonet with mismatched 1940 dated scabbard. CONDITION: stock appears to have been cleaned post war with some light chipping around buttplate, finish loss between bands, scattered handling marks & light dings. Metal retains 80% arsenal rework blue with some light dings on front of trigger guard assembly, scattered edge wear, oxidation & some further dings. Action functions properly when hand cycled. Very good bright bore. (25-484/MJC). CURIO. $500-800.
