This rare experimental helmet is handmade and features lower sides with a slightly raised medial ridge. It has a dark field green-painted finish with a leather liner and fine cotton web chinstrap. It may be classified as a 5A prototype. Experimental helmets were made in the armor shop of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in 1917 and 1918 when the US entered WWI. The liner in this helmet is of 4-tongue variety that was developed in the 1920s and became the standard liner for the M1917 until replaced by the famous M1 helmet of WWII. Truly one of the rarest examples of American military helmets. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: this helmet comes with a plexiglass display stand. CONDITION: helmet shows very light wear overall from handling. (02-23081/BF). $2,000-4,000.
