IN JERUSALEM. This exceptionally artistic piece of trench art measures nearly 11" high and 3" in diameter. The artillery shell was originally manufactured by Friedrich Krupp of Germany and is stamped "AUG 1916" on the base. Shells like this were acquired by the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem around 1918 and decorated to commemorate the liberation of Jerusalem. The vase boasts impressive Damascus inlay work as well as engraving. The top Hebrew inscription translates to "In commemoration of the liberation of Jerusalem 24 Kislev 1917." This is the date when British troops liberated Jerusalem from the Turks. The front of the vase shows the Wailing Wall, and the reverse shows the Tower of David. The shells were originally acquired by Boris Schatz, who was the founder of Bezalel, and began production of Zionist souvenirs from spent artillery shell casings to help overcome the economic hardships of the Jewish settlement in newly liberated Palestine. CONDITION: The piece shows light wear overall, with a very attractive patina. (02-23621/BF). $800-1,300.
