BABIES. A seldom seen gas mask dated to the WWII period, created by the British government to protect babies from poison gas attacks by the Germans. This gas mask was designed for children up to two years of age. The infant would be placed inside the mask with the head inside the steel reinforced helmet so that the child could see through the transparent visor. The canvas part would then be around the baby's body and secured with straps underneath. The canvas material was treated with a rubber coating to prevent gas from seeping through the protection provided by the mask. Shockingly, there was an asbestos filter on the side of the mask, utilized in the absorption of poisonous gases. There was a flexible, accordion-like, rubber tube attached that, when actuated back and forth, would pump clean air into the mask. CONDITION: the gas mask generally shows light wear with minor degradation to the rubberized canvas. Iron parts show minimal oxidation. Straps and frame seem complete. Accordion pump still functions. (02-23898/BF). $220-400.
