WWII Era Japanese Officer's Shin-gunto Sword, with leather covered scabbard. The 24-5'' blade is bright with an undulating irregular temperline. Blade is a wartime machine-made blade with an oil tempered hamon, signed with a two-character signature on one side and painted factory assembly numbers on the other side. The habaki, blade collar, is a typical brass military type. The tsuba guard is a mid-war Army type, solid brass with a gold gilt finish. Handle is wood, covered in stingray skin and wrapped with green silk cord. Handle fittings are copper with gold gilt highlights. Scabbard is wood with a leather combat field cover. There is a retaining stud at the top of the scabbard, but the snap locking strap is missing. Condition is very good with the blade having a couple of light rust stains, some light scuffs and minor scratches. Handle shows shrinkage and cracking to the ray skin, nice silk cord wrapping, and minor age to the handle fittings and guard. Leather cover on the scabbard shows age, a few stains and scuffs, and has some tears and losses near the top. Est.: $500-$700.
