SIDE RAIL STYLE SNIPER RIFLE. Cal. 8x57 (8mm Mauser). S# 9992e. Bbl. 23 1/2". Blade front sight. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2000m. Rifle is configured as a short side-rail sniper rifle with a Zeiss Zielvier scope. Scope has post reticle and optics with a slight green tint. Body of scope shows some pitting and scattered fading to brown. Scope mount is matching-numbered to receiver. JP Sauer was the only factory maker of the short side rail sniper rifles, and it is probable this rifle was assembled as a sniper post-war. Receiver top has "243" marking for Mauser Borsigwalde and "1940" date. Band spring is matching with Steyr "623" inspection stamp and appears renumbered. Other visible numbers matching, and many proofed with correct eagle "26" inspection stamps. Blued finish. Laminated stock set with left side sling provisions and leather K98k sling. Right side of butt has two eagle "26" inspection stamps and eagle "H" Heer (Army) marking. Duffel cut under rear band. Repro cleaning rod present. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: K98k hinged muzzle cover. CONDITION: stock set shows a few small chips, some dings, and scattered handling marks. Metal retains 60% original blue with some scratches on bottom metal, scattered fading to gray, oxidation, and some band removal wear. Action functions properly when hand-cycled. Very good, bright bore with some light frosting. (24-5864/MJC). CURIO. $2,000-3,000.
