WWII GERMAN MEDAL BAR OF KNIGHT’S CROSS RECIPIENT

GENERAL OF INFANTRY THOMAS-EMIL VON WICKEDE. This fine 7 award medal bar belonging to Commander in Chief 10th Army Corps & General of Infantry Thomas-Emil von Wickede consists of a WWI 2nd Class Iron Cross, a WWI era Knight’s Cross of the Royal Prussian House of Hohenzollern marked on the base, “W 938” indicating mfg. by Wagner of Berlin, 1914 Mecklenburg Military Cross 2nd Class, the Hamburg Hanseatic Cross, German 1914-1918 Cross with swords, WWII German Army 25 Year Long Service Cross with ribbon eagle & the WWII German Army 12 Year Long Service Medal with ribbon eagle. Medals are mounted with original black felt backing. Von Wickede was born Apr. 23, 1893 & entered the Imperial German Army on Sept. 2, 1913. He served on the Eastern Front during the war earning the Knight’s Cross of the Royal Prussian House of Hohenzollern, both classes of 1914 Iron Cross & the Hamburg Hanseatic Cross. At the end of the war, he transferred to the Reichsheer where he rose steadily through the ranks until in 1939 he was tasked with leading a battalion in the Polish Campaign. He then transferred to the Western Front where he earned both clasps for his Iron Crosses as well as the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross. After transferring to the Eastern Front, he rose to the rank of General of Infantry & Commander of the 10th Army Corps. He was killed in a plane crash in Austria on June 23, 1944. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a framed contemporary photograph of Von Wickede. CONDITION: most medals show light wear. The House Order of Hohenzollern shows no damage to the enamel, however the Hamburg Hanseatic Cross has some chipping to the red enamel on the central medallion. Backing has minor moth damage.
