WWII GERMAN NAVAL COAST ARTILLERY UNIFORM COAT,

PANTS, HAT, PISTOL BELT & BOOTS BELONGING TO ADMIRAL THEODOR BURCHARDI. This uniform was worn by Admiral Burchardi while ashore with Coast Artillery units. Uniform coat is a medium sage green, fine wool gabardine with gilded brass anchor buttons. There are 3 loops above the left breast pocket to support a medal bar. The right breast pocket has loops to support at least 3 badges & there is 1 loop below the pocket. The right breast pocket has 2 loops to support a single badge. Shoulder boards are woven gold & silver metallic bullion with a single aluminum pip denoting the rank of admiral. The dark green collar has lg. blue collar tabs with gold bullion & celleon embroidered admiral’s insignia. Above the right pocket is a celleon embroidered Coast Artillery eagle sewn to the uniform. The lining is gray rayon & the sleeves are lined in a striped, cream colored rayon. There is an interior slit to accommodate a dagger hanger. The inside left breast pocket has a sewn in printed tag filled in with pen & reads, “WILHELM Holters BERLIN W.50 TAUENTZIENSTR.16 [Burchardi](written in script) No [535](written) den [10.4.43](written) 19”. The uniform pants are a heavy dark gray wool gabardine with royal blue piping & dual 1 1/2" royal blue stripes down the outside of each leg. The interior waistband is gray, white & black striped cotton with a gray, white & black patterned lining below. The inside of the pockets are coarse natural cotton. The inside of the rear pocket has a tag also named to Admiral Burchardi. The riding style britches have 5 closure buttons extending up 9" from the hem. The fly has 4 closure buttons & a metal clip. The visor cap has a medium sage green wool crown with a dark green wool felt band. The cap is entirely piped in dark green. The chinstrap is gold bullion with gilded brass anchor buttons at the terminals. The eagle is of fine gold bullion as is the wreath below. The cockade is black leather with an aluminum ring & red felt center. The leather visor is finished black on the outside as well as the inside. Brown leather sweatband with vent holes in the front & a blue ribbon woven through the entire length. The interior lining is a light to medium blue & has a diamond shaped sweatshield in the center. The uniform group includes a lg. brown leather belt with an open rectangular, gilded aluminum, pebble finished buckle & a dual fork closure. There is a German military pistol holster on the belt likely for a PP or a Browning Hi-Power. The holster features a spare mag. pouch & a stud/flap retention system. The group further includes a fine pair of period black leather German riding boots with pull straps that read, “RUDOLF MURTZ WIEN VI.. WINDMUHLG.9.”. Admiral Friedrich Wilhelm Theodor Burchardi was born in 1892 & lived to the age of 91. He rose to the rank of admiral in the German Navy & his highest award was the Knight’s Cross with oak leaves. He was also awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class & 2nd Class in both World Wars as well as the Finnish Order of the Cross of Liberty 1st Class with swords. He held numerous positions in the German Navy with continuous service from his initial Sea Cadet training in 1911 until he was captured on April 18, 1945. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copies of information relating to Admiral Burchardi. CONDITION: the coat shows very light wear overall as do the britches. The cap has moderate wear overall with some evidence of minor moth tracks. The hat was obviously extensively worn as the sweatband & liner show heavy stains. Belt & holster show light overall wear & remain quite serviceable. Boots show expected general overall wear with notable wear to the soles. PROVENANCE: Lifetime Collection of Dennis Ottaway.
