WWII Japanese Officer's Shingunto Sword, machine made, ca. 1942-43. The 25-5/8'' long blade has a gunome or wavy hamon temperline that was quenched in oil. This is a factory-made blade with a signed tang and painted assembly numbers. Solid guard is gold-gilded brass with cherry blossoms around the edge. Handle is covered in white stingray skin and wrapped with green silk cord; handle fittings are copper with gold-gilded edges. Scabbard is steel with a rough textured brown/green paint; scabbard fittings are copper with gold gilted edges. Condition is very good, the blade showing a good percentage of its original factory polish. There are areas of fading to the finish due to age and poor storage and pinprick rust spots, small spider rust, and stains that may clean up some. There are some small flaws in the forging of the blade near the point, that have been there since the sword left the factory. Handle fittings, guard, and scabbard fittings show age and wear from use; handle wrapping is very nice. One half of the ferrule tube that the knot loop fits into that is missing. Scabbard retains approx. 90% of its original paint, with some scuffs, scrapes, and some light rust on the edge. Approx. 39.5'' in overall length. Est.: $600-$900. (John Ackerman collection)
