This high quality bronze sextant w/ lighted quadrant was made by Henry Hughes & Son Limited. The scale is marked "MADE IN ENGLAND". The sextant has a black finish, except for the scale, which is polished bright. The movable arm has a brass Husun logo. The sextant appears to be complete w/ its eyepieces, mirrors & shades. The lockable wooden case of hardwood construction is stamped on top "DD 467". This would seem to indicate that this instrument was used aboard the Fletcher-class destroyer USS Strong, which was built at Bath, Maine in 1942. There is a data sheet inside the cover stating that the eyepiece is 2 1/2 power, seven degree angle & effective aperture of 1.22. The data sheet is dated 15/1/45". The inside cover has additional tags for "M.LOW INC" & 'NEGUS NAUTICAL INSTRUMENTS". There is an instruction plate detailing cleaning & lubrication procedures. The case also contains two accessory eyepieces, adjustment wrench & case key. CONDITION: sextant shows moderate wear & staining w/ exposed brass turning patina. Instrument light does not function. All movements & adjustments appear to turn freely. Optics may be slightly cloudy, but appear serviceable. Case has moderate wear, scratches & handling marks. Brass parts have oxidation & patina. (02-23730/RW). NON-GUN. $200-300.
