This is a Winchester M1885 High Wall, manufactured 1989, that was professionally converted to .30-40 Cal. by William Kirk, the consigner great Uncle. He started out as a machinist in the mines in Cripple Creek Colo. during the gold rush era, and later became a gunsmith in Encampment, Jackson Hole, and Rawlins, in Wyoming in the early 1900's. Lever-action, drop breech. 22 1/2" tapered round barrel with front blade, and a vintage Lyman 56 peep sight mounted to the left receiver. Lower barrel is stamped 30-40. and "Kirk" 4 times, along with a small cross. Serial number on lower tang. (Very faint), with patent date. No visible Winchester markings. Bore appears excellent/bright, action is smooth/tight. Wood is very good with minor scratches, Upper, and lower tangs are a little proud of the wood. Factory checkered plastic buttplate, sling swivels. Re-blued metal finish is about 90% with scratches. handling/edge wear with scattered pin-prick pitting showing under the re-blue on the receiver. Some finish loss on the right receiver. Great Western History, can be researched in newspapers, and the Wyoming Project. NRA Condition-Very Good as Refurbished. Antique Firearm
