This is a Winchester M1885 Low wall , manufactured 1912, that was professionally converted to .410 Ga. (2.5" shells) by William Kirk, the consignor's great Uncle. He started out as a machinist in the mines in cripple Creek Colo. during the gold rush, and later became a gunsmith in Encampment, Jackson Hole, and Rawlins, Wyoming in the early 1900's. He made these for sheep herders where there was a market for them. Lever-action, drop breech. 26 1/4" octagonal to round barrel with front sight band/screw, and rear sight dovetail with no sight. Lower barrel is stamped "410", "W.M. Kirk". ".22 Long" is lined out. Serial number on lower tang. Winchester markings on upper tang. Bore appears excellent/bright, action is smooth/tight. Drop in choke gauge shows a bit more open bored than CYL. Wood is good with normal scratches/dings, two small dents on the left buttstock, contrasting black painted fore cap. lower tang screw is protruding a bit, won't thread. Curved steel buttplate. Blued metal finish is about 30% with scratches, handling/edge wear. Barrel has turned a dark brown patina with scattered areas of pin-prick pitting,.
