Winchester Hotchkiss bolt action rifle, 45-70 caliber, serial #40388. The rifle is in overall very good to nearly fine condition with a 26” blued octagonal barrel, case colored receiver, knife blade front and elevator rear sight sights. The barrel retains 60-70% of its original blue finish with some light surface rust and scratches evident. The receiver still shows small amounts of case color in the protected areas with the balance having become a silver tone. The tang is marked “Model of 1883”. The finely checkered deluxe wood stocks are in overall very good condition showing slight mars, compressions and flattening of checkering. Further evidence of the deluxe stocking is present in the ebony tip on the fore end and ebony inlay of the pistol grip. The wood has beautiful feather crotch figure in the buttstock, a blank silver escutcheon plate and a smooth, metal crescent butt plate. The bore is very good, the action crisp and markings sharp on this rare and impressive rifle. A consignor provided letter indicates the rifle left the factory on May 24, 1886. Est.: $6,000-$12,000.
