'First Model' Rifle. Lever-action. Very rare Model 1876, saddle ring carbine in 45/60. Early 1877 manufacture date. Full length forend was standard on the M76. Introduced in 1876 as Winchesters "Centennial Rifle"., it was discontinued in 1898 after 63,871 guns had been produced. The 45/60 was a cut down version of the 45/70 intended for 19th century Big-Game hunting. Screw-fastened dust cover with checked thumb slide. Distinctive full-length walnut forearm, and long forend tip. 22' barrel has a steel block front sight, and v-notch, circle rear flip sight. Saddle-ring is stable-mounted to the left side of the receiver. The stock, and forearm are straight grain American walnut with an oil finish. Carbine style butt plate, with brass buttoned "Trapdoor". Lower tang lever latch. . Tang marked "MODEL 1876". Serial number on lower tang. "45-60" marked on the brass ejection port cover. Barrel in front of the receiver marked "Cal. 45-60". Top of barrel stamped in two lines, "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT., KINGS IMPROVEMENT-PATENED-MARCH 20 1865. OCTOBER 16 1860. All markings are clear, except the first digit of the serial number. Action is smooth/tight. Bore is good, but slightly pitted. Wood is very good, with slight dings/dents. There is a very narrow crack on the right forend running from the tip to the barrel band. Blued metal finish is gone, except for traces on the loading gate. The rest is a gray/brown patina. NRA Condition-Very Good. Antique Firearm.
