Winchester Model 1892 .44-40 SN: 723871
This rifle was imported to Great Britain in the early days of WW1.Vintage lever action rifle chambered for .44 Winchester Center Fire (44-40) ammunition circa 1912. It has a 24" round barrel, full length magazine tube, blade/bead front sight, adjustable rear buckhorn sporting sight, missing the elevator, smooth trigger and knurled hammer spur. Two piece smooth wood stocks have a metal forend cap and a crescent metal butt plate. Standard Winchester markings. This rifle has the London inspection proof , crown over "V" on the barrel, & receiver, the barrel also has the "not English Made" stamp, London black powder, crown over "CP', and the bore diameter, and case length. They were standard sporting rifles in 44 WCF but they all had round barrels, which were purchased and used by the British during WW I. These are marked with CB and then a number on the stock. This rifle has "C.B.", & "294" stamped on the right butt stock. It is stamped on the underside of the fore stock, forward of the receiver "RGP". (Royal Gibraltar Police.?) Most of these rifles went to the Royal Navy. The rifle has a old nickel finish, we found one other British 1892 with the same finish. The bore is fair, good rifling, with scattered light pin-prick pitting, wood is sound with many dings/dents, action is crisp/tight, is mostly all there with handling loss to the receiver, and tangs. NRA Condition-Fair to Good. C&R Firearm.
