Winchester Thickside Highwall Rifle with #526 Stevens-Pope Barrel
Made by Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1909. The barrel is mentioned in Warren Greatbatch and Tom Rowe's book "Stevens-Pope 1901-1913 Volume II" on Page 172, and was once owned by Ned Roberts and Dr. Mann. It is also mentioned this barrel was originally on a Stevens 44 No. 45 action. Rifle, according to Cody Research, was originally a 22 Long Rifle with all other options matching letter. Barrel is a 31" blued octagon No. 4 weight barrel in 28-30 caliber with Stevens-Pope address and is fitted with Wind gage front sight and a Winchester B5 Telescope. Barrel has "526" and Pope number "18/124" which matches false muzzle and bullet starter. Barrel shows evidence of forearm screw movement under forearm wood. This rifle is further unusual because action is a coil spring Thickside with blued finish Schuetzen double set triggers and nickel spur finger lever with tang Vernier sight. Rifle has a walnut pistol grip checkered Schuetzen stock with Helm butt plate and Winchester grip cap. Matching Winchester checkered splinter forend with ebony inlay and is drilled for a Pope palm rest. This rifle comes with Cody Research and a letter from Ned Roberts to Ray M. Smith congratulating him on the purchase of a 28-30 Pope-Winchester. Same rifle? Not sure. Also comes with a Pope mold and grease pump. The original Pope wooden ramrods for this rifle are featured in lot 139. J.T. Livengood Collection. CALIBER: 28-30 Stevens. S/N: 109277. FFL STATUS: Antique.
