Colt 1st Type Artillery Model Single Action Revolver, #115629, .45 Colt cal. 5-1/2'' barrel, blue and case hardened finish, with one-piece Frank Heath cartouched walnut grips dated 1885. Revolver originally left the factory Oct. 14, 1885, in a 50-gun shipment, and was turned over to the U.S. Gov't Inspector, with 1983 dated factory letter. Revolver was later reconfigured with a 5-1/2'' barrel, but all matching serial numbers and original grips were retained. Barrel marked beneath ejector rod housing ''5629''. Many Artillery revolvers in this serial number range were fielded with the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry (Rough Riders) and were issued in June 1898. This revolver's serial number falls in between known Rough Rider serial numbers 115564 and 115739, both of which were modified by Colt on 1-31-1896. (See page 11 of the book, ''Cavalry & Artillery Revolvers'', by Kopec and Fenn.) Condition is very good with 1898 factory finish toning a gray/brown. Grips with even general thinning but clear date and ''FH'' circled cartouche. Action is crisp, bore is very good. A nice example of one of the scarcest Artillery type revolvers known. Est.: $4,500-$6,000. (Antique)
