Composite Martially-marked Colt Model 1851/61 Navy Revolver, with period leather holster, #65250, .36 cal., 7.5'' ''streamlined'' barrel, with a small German-silver blade front sight marked with the one-line ''New-York U.S. America'' address; patent ''creeping'' loading lever; round 6-shot cylinder with the rolled naval battle scene; frame marked ''Colts/Patent/U.S.'' on left side; brass gripstraps with a tiny ''V'' inspector's stamp on left-front web of small rounded triggerguard; oil-finished one-piece walnut grips. It appears that this revolver was assembled from Model 1851 Navy parts (from the barrel back) and a Model 1861 streamlined barrel that was obviously re-numbered to match the balance of the revolver, as only around 38,000 Model 1861s were mfg'd (c. 1861-73) and this gun's serial number is many thousands higher. Backstrap was also re-numbered; wedge and screw are modern replacements. Condition is good as assembled. Steel surfaces exhibit an overall smooth gunmetal gray-brown patina with scattered light erosion; the barrel shows more use, with scattered discoloration, nicks and pitting (mainly to left side and right lug); the cylinder scene is light (may have been rolled that way) and perhaps15% visible; brass has a smooth aged color. Grips are complete and solid, with 2 ''kill notches'' on right side, knackering at butt and scattered nicks and dings from age and use. Action is sticky but functions; bore is surprisingly clean with deep rifling. Brown leather military-style flap holster is complete, with surface flaking mainly at barrel area and back side, and a 2'' area of loose stitching; the initials ''C.N.G.'' are carved into the belt loop. Est.: $400-$800. (Antique)
