Mexican War Era Model Model 1841 ''Mississippi'' Percussion Rifle, by Harpers Ferry Armory, NVSN, .54 cal., 31.5'' round barrel with dovetailed blade front and notched rear sights (and a plugged dovetail 3'' from breech) marked ''V/P/(eagle head)'' and a large ''T'' at breech; beveled lockplate with a spread-eagle over ''US'' ahead of hammer, and ''Harpers/Ferry/1849'' vertically behind; double set triggers; brass furniture including the signature large patchbox opening to a trap for patches and spare small parts, serpentine sideplate, buttplate, triggerguard with long rear tang, finger-grip at rear and sling swivel at front, two spring-retained barrel bands (top double-strap band with sling swivel); steel ramrod with brass trumpet tip; oil-stained walnut fullstock. Mfg'd ca. 1846-55. Condition is good to very good, the barrel (long ago reduced 1.5'' in length) having a heavy deep brown patina with light pitting at breech; the lockplate and hammer smooth with a dark gunmetal color; the brass with a deep age patina; the double triggers and triggerguard period additions. Stock overall is solid and smooth with the expected marks of use and age, large ''T''s deeply stamped at sideplate apron and left buttstock, and cracks and what appears to be wood erosion (perhaps from fire or prolonged dampness) at butt. Action functions but does not hold cock; bore is dark but with definite rifling. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)
