FINE ICONIC & VERY RARE DUFILHO CONFEDERATE

STAFF OFFICER'S SWORD WITH "PELICAN FEEDING YOUNG". 30.5" unstopped fullered blade, crisp maker’s mark: "DUFILHO / NEW ORLEANS". This is among the most beautiful of all Confederate officer swords. Large guard with relief cast Louisiana State Seal (Pelican feeding young) in laurel wreath and large "CS". This sword is a fine "attic condition" survivor with original scabbard with scalloped mounts and rococo decorated ring bands. Alexandre H. Dufilho was prewar cutler making surgical instruments and bowie knives. He continued his trade during the war, making the highest quality Confederate swords. CONDITION: very good-fine overall, blade has smooth gray/brown surface, remnants of old sharpening. Hilt, pommel, and scabbard have strong areas of gold wash with balance chocolate/brown patina. Scabbard is complete and original with a small glued repair to leather between top mounts which is barely discerned. PROVENANCE: Cullen Smith estate collection. (02-17236/JS). $30,000-40,000.
