CIVIL WAR 23RD PENNSYLVANIA INFANTRY RECRUITING BROADSIDE. 30” x 35” frame, 21” x 26.5” mat. Birney Zouaves were recruited from Philadelphia, wore distinctive colorful red trimmed Zouave coats and pantaloons, and had good war record in army of Potomac. David Bell Birney, Colonel of the 23rd PA, raised the regiment in Philadelphia at his own expense. He was promoted to Brigadier General in late 1861 and to Major General for distinguished service on May 20, 1863. Birney's division in the III corps was demolished at Gettysburg where he took over command of the Corps after Sickles' wounding. He was given command of the 10th Corps, Army of the James by Grant in July, 1864. He died of typhoid fever in October of that year. At Gettysburg, one member won the Congressional Medal of Honor. Large, oversized recruiting posters like this are rare with few surviving especially early war and from such famous regiment. CONDITION: very good overall, crisp contrast, not removed from frame, not dry-mounted, surfaces appear very good with some age yellowing, 2 brown ink names signed on verso on right edge can be discerned.
