Knight's Templar Fraternal Sword, by Ames, ca. 1870-1900. The 28'' oval double-edged blade has etched panels with floral decorations and is named to ''Francis G. Sager'' in a panel; reverse side is etched ''Hugh de Pagens Encampment''. The Ames Mfg. Co. mark is etched at the ricasso. Crossguard and clamshells are brass with templar emblems in pierced designs. Handle is black-painted wood. Pommel is a knight's helmet with feather plume. There is a small chain connected between the pommel and guard. Scabbard is brass with engraved scrolls, floral decorations, and the templar cross. Reverse of scabbard at the top has Ames mfg. markings, and the monogram ''FGS'' engraved at the hanger area. OAL is 36''. (See the book ''Ames Sword Company 1829-1935'', by John D. Hamilton, where an exact example is pictured.) Condition is very good, the blade showing age graying and a few minor spots of light rust spotting. Brass of the guard and pommel shows a dark patina with traces of the fire gold glit finish remaining in protected areas. Small chain is probably a replacement. Wood grip is sound and tight showing wear on the high edges. Scabbard is bright with most of its gold gilt finish remaining, showing only light wear in some areas and a couple of light dings. Est.: $200-$300.
