O.W. Holmes Marked Single Shot Rifle
The Seller's Book lists an "Orville Holmes" in Hudson, Wisconsin, circa 1891. It is also interesting to note that these initials correspond to the poet and his son Oliver Wendell Holmes, who comes up as an associate of George Shattuck, who also has a name connected with gunsmithing (G.S. Shattuck). Did these men dabble in gun experimentation - who knows? Rifle has a 30" blued octagon rifled barrel with Lyman sheared blade front sight and Buckhorn adjustable rear sight and is stamped at breech "O.W. Holmes". Action was at one time nickeled and has a latch releasing it to a swivel position with a spring loaded lever to eject empty casings. Action has hammer that allows for centerfire or rimfire use controlled by a plain single trigger. Plain walnut butt stock with crescent steel butt plate and matching walnut plain splinter forearm with pewter nosecap. A rifle worthy of more research. J.T. Livengood Collection. CALIBER: 44 Rimfire or Centerfire. FFL STATUS: Antique.
CONDITION
Overall good with freckling appearance on barrel. Action is pitted with only traces of nickel. Wood shows traces of original varnish with handling marks. Dark bore with functioning mechanics.
