(NEEDLE FIRE) SINGLE SHOT BOLT ACTION MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 15.4 mm. S# 9412. Numbers match on receiver, barrel, bolt, cocking piece and rear sight. 33 1/8" barrel. Two leaf folding rear sight. Inverted V front sight. These rifles were developed by noted firearms designer Johann Nikolaus Von Dreyse. They were the first widely used bolt action service rifles as they were adopted by Prussia in 1841. The term needle gun comes from the needle like firing pin which pierces the base of the cartridge to reach the primer in the base of the bullet. Octagonal receiver is marked on left side w/ "Soemmerda MD" & "1867" indicating mfg. by the Dreyse-Zündnadel factory in Prussia. Additionally marked in Gothic "SG Mod 62". Rear of receiver marked on right side w/ "1863". Receiver ring marked on top w/ "ZD" in oval. On left side w/ Prussian eagle & on right side w/ Imperial proofs on both receiver & bbl. Bolt handle marked w/ Prussian eagle. Needle is present in bolt. Bbl. is retained by 3 brass bands. Retained by springs. Cleaning rod is present. Brass trigger guard bow w/ hand grip. Hardwood stock w/ steel buttplate. Buttstock is marked on right side w/ "crown FW", "crown S" & what appears as "LK" in Gothic & small illegible circular marking. CONDITION: stock has original finish w/ the appearance of added finish & moderate wear, staining & handling marks throughout. Two 1" cracks behind receiver tang. Metal has turned overall gray & patina. Bbl. has notably darker patina appearance w/ oxidation & very fine pitting. Brass parts have the appearance of having been cleaned at an early date but are turning patina. Very good shiny bore w/ sharp lands. PROVENANCE: From the Raymond Darida Estate.
