SHOT BOLT ACTION MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 11mm Mauser. S# 2456N. All visible numbers match except buttstock has “23” at belly behind swivel. Bbl. 29 3/8". Ladder rear sight graduated to 1600 meters. Inverted V front sight. The Jaeger rifle saw extremely wide use. Primarily intended for light infantry (Jaegers) they were also issued to engineers, fortress troops & the Navy. Some were used aboard air craft in WWI to engage observation balloons using incendiary ammunition. The most notable use of the Jaeger rifle was to arm German Askari troops in the African colonies & they were widely used there notably in WWI. This rifle is marked on the buttplate tang “8.A.L.8.181.”. Receiver is marked on left top flat in Gothic “B Mod.71”. Receiver ring marked on top right flat w/ Imperial proofs & marked on receiver bridge “1875”. Bbl. is marked on top flat “OESTERR.WAFFEBGES”. Marked on right top flat w/ Imperial proofs & left top flat w/ crown “FW”. Bayonet stud on right side of upper band. Cleaning rod is present. These rifles have a stepped muzzle in order to accept a wide variety of bayonets. Bottom swivels on the lower band & at the belly of the stock. Trigger guard tang is curved to form the characteristic handgrip on these rifles. Walnut stock marked on right side w/ worn Imperial crown property marks & “7”. Marked at belly w/ crown acceptance marks. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Model 1865/71 “Faschinenmesser” w/ 18 1/4" fullered saw back. These bayonets were used by pioneers for making brush wood fascines. Bayonet is marked on left Ricasso “E&H.NEURAUS SOLIGEN”. Cross guard is marked on left side w/ “R.E.13.114.”. Blade is marked on top “crown W75”. One piece cast brass handle w/ ribs on right side only. Leather scabbard w/ brass fittings. Throat is marked “A.T.A.7.166.”. Bayonet is in well worn condition. Has been cleaned; blade has been sharpened. Handle has wear & handling marks throughout. Scabbard has warping, loose fittings, wear & scuffing & does not allow bayonet to fully seat. CONDITON: stock has generally legible markings w/ moderate wear & handling marks throughout. Forend tip leaves sm. gap behind upper band. Metal is turning overall gray & patina w/ wear & light oxidation. Bore has strong lands but scattered oxidation & fine pitting throughout. (01-22342/RW). ANTIQUE. $900-1,200.
