MODEL 4 SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL WITH HOLSTER. Cal. 7.65mm. S# 63396. Bbl. 3 1/2". Unable to produce enough Model 4 pistols for the Prussian military, Walther licensed production of their Model 4 to Immanuel Meffert, who further sub-contracted Model 4 production to various other mfgs. This example, mfg. by Gebruder Merkel, is marked "SELDSTLADE-PISTOLE CAL. 7,65. WALTHER'S PATENT" above the Walther banner logo, followed by a Crown/N commercial nitro proof, the S#, and a crowned Imperial Prussian military acceptance proof on the left side of the slide. Left side of the frame is marked with an intertwined "GM" monogram within a shield, denoting sub-contracted mfg. by Merkel. Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall. Frame is mounted with 2-piece "CW" monogram checkered brown synthetic grips. Half-moon blade front sight with dovetailed V-notch rear sight. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame and slide. MAGS: one 8-rd. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: black leather holster marked "CARL BUSSE G.M.B.H./ MAINZ/ 1917" on the body. Interior of the closure flap is ink stamped with what appears to read "R.A.XI." CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their original factory blue finish, exhibiting areas of wear and thinning that show through to gray patina, some superficial handling marks, as well as some small spots of light surface oxidation and pitting overall. Near mirror bore, exhibiting some scattered spots of light pitting while retaining strong rifling throughout. Grips are good, showing some smoothing, some scattered handling marks, as well as a few small cracks. Holster remains malleable, exhibiting some areas of age-related cracking and minor crazing, but otherwise remaining sturdy and serviceable. (24-6839/MLW). CURIO. $300-500.
